What type of music?

I have been involved with many different genres. I have written and recorded dozens of piano ballads, was in an alternative rock band, and have written over 50 original raps as well. Currently, though, Im focusing on vocal looping, where I can basically create instrumentals with just my voice and beatboxing. Then, I can rap and sing on top of it and add effects as I go. It’s a great fit for my particular skill-set, which is focused around versatility and lyrics.

When did you first start?

I started playing piano when I was 8 or 9, then learned to beatbox and rap when I was in 8th grade. It started off as just a hobby, but I really started practicing during my junior year of high school. I would freestyle rap with all my friends and then, during my senior year, I started writing and composing music. It really carried over into college, where I performed all over campus with my A Capella group, but also my band, and on an individual level.

Why did you decide to start it?

I was an only child who grew up in a quiet suburb of Washington DC. I needed something to really focus on and to occupy my time, and I needed a positive outlet for stress, as well as my creativity. Making music made me feel like I was connecting to a higher power in some ways, and still does to this day.

Are you a solo Artist or part of group?

I am currently working on solo performing with my loop station. I am trying to carve a niche for myself within the Detroit hip-hop scene as not only a vocal DJ, but also the cities premiere beatboxer. I love jamming and collaborating with other artists, however, and have recorded material with piano players, guitarists, and rappers alike.
What name do you go by?

J-Rose!
How did you come up with the name?

It was on the spot. I was at the Original Hip Hop Shop in Detroit and they asked me how I wanted to be introduced. I paused for a few seconds, and came up with something I thought would stick.
Who do you like to collaborate with?

Anybody with an open musical mind, really, because I cross between many different genres. I love jazz, blues and rock but am an avid hip-hop and funk fan as well. The only kinds of music I cant relate to are trap and most country. Otherwise, I love collaborating with people who also share my multi-genre love of music.

Where do you play?

I perform at open mics all the time in Ferndale, Clawson and Detroit. I have opened for rappers in Clinton Township, Uttica and a few other areas. Im new to Michigan so Im still getting myself acclimated and connecting with as many artists. Beatboxing is the fifth element of hip-hop and needs to be maintained in the culture.

When are your upcoming shows?

November 29th at the Grasshopper in Ferndale, ill be doing a short looping set with Profit, and possibly other beatboxing during the show. Beyond that, I will be doing a mini-tour in New Orleans in mid-January.
